Energy Minister Stuart Young recently met with Hungarian ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, Balázs Heincz, to discuss energy-related matters of mutual interest. The meeting took place at the ministry’s offices at the Port of Spain International Waterfront Centre on July 12.
This meeting was a follow-up to discussions Young had with Hungarian Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó on April 17. The talks centered around Europe’s gas diversification efforts and the potential role Trinidad and Tobago could play in enhancing Europe’s energy security.
During the recent meeting, Young emphasized Trinidad and Tobago’s capabilities in LNG, ammonia, methanol, urea, and UAN production. He also mentioned a specific project that the ministry is collaborating on with European companies. This project focuses on carbon reduction and gas supply potential, though specific details were not disclosed.
As Hungary currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), Heincz updated Young on the council’s efforts to finance sustainable energy projects globally through its “global gateway” strategy. This strategy aims to enhance digital, energy, and transport sectors, as well as improve health, education, and research systems worldwide.
Between 2021-2027, the EU plans to mobilize up to €300 billion for sustainable projects, ensuring benefits for local communities and partner countries. Heincz also mentioned an EU-supported project that could bring market and trade opportunities for Trinidad and Tobago, though details on this project were not disclosed.
