UTT and PowerGen agree on partnership for AI and digital transformation

The University of TT (UTT) and Power Generation Company Ltd (PowerGen) have joined forces in a strategic partnership aimed at addressing the challenges facing the power sector in Trinidad and Tobago. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on July 5 at the UTT Chaguanas Campus, marking a significant step forward in creating a more sustainable and innovative future for the country.

UTT chairman Prof Clément Imbert highlighted the university’s commitment to advancing education, research, and innovation, drawing on his extensive experience in the power sector to emphasize the potential impact of this partnership. Acting vice president Prof Rean Maharaj outlined the focus of the MoU on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and digitalization to drive efficiency and unlock new opportunities across industries.

The signing ceremony at UTT’s Chaguanas Campus brought together representatives from both PowerGen and UTT, underscoring the collaborative effort to drive technological innovation and competency development in Trinidad and Tobago. PowerGen’s general manager Dr Haydn I Furlonge spoke to the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry to enhance sustainable and efficient operations, ultimately leading to energy and cost savings.

With a specific focus on digital transformation and cybersecurity, the MoU aims to protect information technology systems from cyber threats while bolstering operational efficiency in areas such as reliability. Through this partnership, both PowerGen and UTT are poised to benefit from the synergy of expertise, innovation, and shared commitment to creating a more sustainable future for Trinidad and Tobago.
