The head of the Police Social and Welfare Association in Trinidad and Tobago, Gideon Dickson, has expressed support for the deployment of Trinidad-based officers to Tobago. However, he raised concerns about some logistical issues that need to be addressed if the plan is to become permanent.

On July 9, following the tragic quadruple murder in Black Rock, Tobago, Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher announced various initiatives to address the rising violence on the island. These measures included deploying additional officers, installing CCTV cameras, gathering intelligence from the cybercrime unit, and providing forensic resources.

With the murder total in Tobago for 2024 already surpassing the record set in 2023, the need for increased police presence is crucial. Prime Minister Dr Rowley called on Tobagonians to collaborate with the incoming Trinidad-based officers in the fight against crime.
Gideon Dickson confirmed that officers are eager to participate in the initiative, with selection and rotation being managed by senior superintendents. He assured that all variables, including family arrangements, are being considered in the process.

While specific details about the number of officers being deployed remain undisclosed for operational reasons, there is a consensus that additional law enforcement personnel are needed in Tobago. The deployment of these officers is viewed as a positive step in addressing the escalating violence on the island.

However, Dickson highlighted the need for logistical planning, especially if the relocation is to become long-term. Suggestions were made to enhance the effectiveness of the additional officers by implementing security measures at ports and improving scanning procedures for travelers.

Overall, the goal is to ensure a coordinated effort among all law enforcement agencies in Tobago to create a safer environment for residents and visitors alike. By working together strategically, sharing information, and utilizing resources efficiently, Dickson believes that Tobago can become a safer place for everyone.
