Trinidadian Emma Saxon was left in a state of shock after seeing drone footage of the devastating impact of Hurricane Beryl on her home in Carriacou. The roof had been ripped off, leaving her anxious about the safety of her husband and five-year-old daughter.

Living in Carriacou for the last five years, Saxon had returned to Trinidad for surgery earlier this year, making her separation from her family even more agonizing. Desperate to reach them, Saxon finally connected with them and was relieved to hear they were safe despite the destruction surrounding them.

As relief efforts began pouring into the affected areas, organizations in Trinidad and Tobago, such as the Heart of the Village Foundation, sent supplies to Carriacou and other impacted islands. The international community also responded, with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management in Trinidad and Tobago and other agencies providing humanitarian aid to the region.

The aftermath of Hurricane Beryl was severe, with reports of extensive damage to buildings, schools, and infrastructure across the affected islands. Evacuation centers in Grenada were filled as thousands sought shelter during the storm, while other islands like St. Vincent and the Grenadines were left without essential resources.

Tragically, the death toll continued to rise as reports came in from various regions affected by the hurricane. Saxon’s husband, along with many others, scrambled to locate important documents and seek assistance in reuniting with their families. The Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs provided contact information for those in need of help, urging people to reach out for support.

As the recovery efforts continued, Saxon’s main focus remained on bringing her family back home. With the resilience of the affected communities and the support of local and international aid, hope remained for rebuilding and healing in the wake of Hurricane Beryl’s devastating impact.
