Managing photos on an Apple device can be a mysterious task, especially if you’re used to the traditional desktop and folders approach. But with the evolving image-management system, it’s essential to understand how your pictures are managed within the Apple workflow.

With iCloud sharing enabled, photos taken on an iPhone or iPad can be synchronized across all your devices. However, adding a photo on a Mac laptop or desktop doesn’t automatically sync unless placed in a designated shared album. This realization caused confusion for many users, including myself, as we expected all photos in the database to be readily available on any device.

While Apple’s Photos app is a capable image editor and the go-to tool for managing photos in the database, it lacks some features that professional photographers may expect. Over the past year, Apple has made the database more accessible, allowing for a more professional workflow and deeper interactions with your iPhone’s raw captures.

Various apps have emerged to enhance the photo editing experience on iOS. From On1 to Photomator, these apps offer tools for advanced editing and compatibility with the Photos database. However, Nitro by Gentlemen Coders seems to be the most competitive option, offering a full parametric image editor on iOS with exceptional editing tools and tagging features.

Although some challenges may persist due to Apple’s proprietary APIs, the loosening of restrictions on the Photos database is a positive step for iPhone photographers and anyone keen on exploring the full potential of the Photos app.
