The United Nations General Assembly designated 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives, emphasizing the crucial role these organizations play in the global economy and sustainable development. This year, we celebrate the International Day of Cooperatives under the theme “Cooperatives Building a Better Future for All,” highlighting their continued significance in society.

Co-operatives, especially in the agrifood sector, are vital in combating hunger and malnutrition, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. The latest SOFI report revealed alarming statistics with undernourishment affecting millions in the region, emphasizing the urgent need for effective solutions to address food insecurity.

Recognizing the importance of co-operatives, the FAO has identified them as key allies in the fight against hunger, promoting family farming in the agrifood chain. Co-operatives help reduce power imbalances, support decent work, enhance territorial governance, and foster public-private partnerships, contributing to sustainable and inclusive development.

Recently, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution endorsing the social and solidarity economy to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The FAO supports this resolution, acknowledging the role of co-operatives in promoting mutual aid, democratic governance, and voluntary cooperation.

With over three million co-operatives globally and 28,000 in Latin America and the Caribbean, these organizations play a significant role in promoting entrepreneurship, economic empowerment, and sustainable development. By working to strengthen institutional frameworks and regulatory mechanisms, the FAO aims to support the growth and impact of co-operatives in transforming agrifood systems.

The FAO continues to collaborate with the International Cooperative Alliance to enhance the co-operative model in the region, emphasizing the importance of alliances in accelerating progress towards the SDGs and combating hunger. As we look towards the future, it is vital to support and strengthen co-operatives to ensure food security and sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean, working together towards a better future for all.
