Last week was a tense time for many as Beryl, a record-breaking category-4 hurricane, made an appearance in June, coming further south than expected. Climate change and its effects have been looming for decades, and with rising sea temperatures, the 2021 hurricane season is predicted to be very active. Parts of the Caribbean Basin are already suffering from the impact of warmer seas and rising sea levels, forcing indigenous communities to abandon their homes.

Climate change is a global crisis, with countries in the Pacific and Indian Oceans also experiencing its effects. The future looks uncertain, with predictions of significant land loss in the Caribbean by 2100. The question remains – will there be a real effort to reshape the future?

As alarming climate news unfolded, political shifts were also in play. The rise of right-wing populism in France and Europe shows a concerning trend, raising questions about priorities in the face of global challenges like climate change. In the US, internal Democratic issues are causing concern about the return of Donald Trump to power, despite President Biden’s confidence in securing a win in the next election.

The path forward is unclear, but as writer Rebecca Solnit said, “Things don’t always change for the better, but they change, and we can play a role in that change if we act.” The time for action is now, to shape a better future for all.
