The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) has finally received much-needed financial assistance from the Government to aid in the aftermath of the devastating February 7 oil spill. The THA received a substantial sum of $50 million on July 17, as confirmed by Chief Secretary Farley Augustine.
Assuring the public that the THA will diligently manage these funds, Augustine expressed a commitment to swiftly disburse payments to service providers impacted by the oil spill. The urgency to alleviate the financial burden on affected parties is evident in the Assembly’s proactive approach.
Highlighting the severity of the situation, Augustine previously criticized the government’s allocation for the clean-up efforts in his draft estimates for fiscal 2024/2025. He emphasized the shortfall of over $100 million, labeling it as a disservice to the people of Tobago. The recent financial injection is a step in the right direction to rectify this deficit and support the community’s recovery process.
