The 2024 hurricane season is off to a roaring start with Beryl becoming the first major hurricane of the season. With maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, Beryl could potentially reach Category 4 status as it approaches the Caribbean, according to forecasters.

The National Hurricane Center issued an advisory classifying Beryl as an “extremely dangerous Category 3 hurricane” that poses a threat of life-threatening winds and storm surge as it heads towards the far eastern Caribbean. This marks the sixth consecutive advisory where Beryl’s wind speed has increased, showcasing the storm’s rapid intensification.

Countries in the path of Beryl include Jamaica, Belize, and parts of Mexico, all of which are on high alert as the hurricane approaches. Forecasters are predicting “a life-threatening storm surge” of up to 6-9 feet and heavy rainfall across Barbados and the Windward Islands, increasing the risk of flash flooding.

While Beryl is not expected to impact South Florida directly, the hurricane season is just getting started. Another tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic off Africa is showing potential to develop into a tropical depression later in the week as it moves towards the eastern and central Caribbean.

As the first hurricane of what is anticipated to be a highly active storm season, Beryl serves as a reminder of the powerful forces at play during the Atlantic hurricane season. With the NOAA predicting an above-normal season, experts are cautioning residents along the East Coast, including Florida, to be prepared for an increased likelihood of major hurricane landfalls in the coming months.

The warm ocean temperatures fueling these hurricanes are expected to persist through peak season in August to October, making it crucial for residents in hurricane-prone areas to stay informed and ready to take action in the event of a major storm. Hurricane season officially ends on November 30th, so stay vigilant and prepared as we navigate through the peak of the storm season.
