As a new government prepares to take the reins from the current PNM administration, there are several pressing issues that will need immediate attention. Here is a breakdown of the top priorities that the incoming government will need to address effectively:

1. The current paradigm of police intervention, which seems to endorse a “shoot to kill” policy, needs to be reevaluated. Relying on extermination tactics is not true policing and needs to be addressed, especially in light of recent comments by Gary Griffith.

2. Foreign corporations currently control the nation’s energy resources, and the country’s energy future is being heavily influenced by external factors, such as Venezuela’s dealings with US policies and OFAC.

3. The recent sale of the refinery to a foreign entity could further compromise national autonomy and priorities, so this issue must be carefully monitored.

4. The government’s tendency to cater to foreign interests and behave in a subservient manner is concerning. It is essential to prioritize national interests over foreign demands to avoid falling into a pattern that mirrors the past experiences of Venezuela.

5. The Rowley Government’s push to solidify certain policies and initiatives, such as the balisier time capsule project, indicates a lack of genuine progress and unity.

6. To reclaim control of valuable resources and reshape the industry, national unity and collaboration will be crucial.

7. The belief that constitutional reform alone can resolve these issues is misguided. Simply adding an “executive presidency” to the mix will not address the underlying challenges.

8. The incoming government will have the authority to reverse controversial policies, such as property tax and excessive regulatory requirements, with a simple majority vote. It is crucial that these decisions are made in the best interest of the nation.

9. It is imperative that the new government avoids falling into the trap of endless rhetoric and political intrigue. Action, not just words, is needed to drive tangible progress.

10. Whether the UNC or another political formation takes the reins, the focus should be on real, impactful change rather than empty promises. The recent bail amendments, for example, should not be seen as a unique achievement if they are not backed by substantial action.

The road ahead for the new government is challenging, but with the right priorities and a commitment to national interests, significant progress can be achieved.
