Ryan Reynolds, beloved for his portrayal of the irreverent “Merc With a Mouth,” is gearing up for his latest adventure as Deadpool in the much-anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine. But this time, Reynolds is dreaming of a classic Hollywood twist for the character, envisioning the late great Cary Grant stepping into Deadpool’s shoes for a vintage film featuring the Marvel character.
During a chat with Turner Classic Movies, Reynolds sang the praises of Grant, famous for his roles in iconic films like Penny Serenade, To Catch a Thief, and Charade, as the perfect fit for the role. “I am in no way comparing myself to him,” Reynolds humbly mused. “But I would think Cary Grant had a bit of a silver tongue.”
In addition to Grant as the lead, Reynolds also shared his ideal director for the project, suggesting that original Scarface director Howard Hawks would be a natural choice. Reynolds believes that Hawks’ talent for rapid-fire dialogue would perfectly suit Deadpool’s witty banter.
Reynolds, who describes himself as a fan of Grant’s work, sees himself following in the footsteps of the legendary actor, particularly his later years. He is set to curate a movie marathon on TCM on Jul. 20, as well as produce a documentary on the late comedian John Candy under his Maximum Effort imprint.
Despite his initial stumble with the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds quickly rebounded with two smash-hit solo Deadpool films, showcasing a more accurate and humorous portrayal of Wade Wilson. Deadpool & Wolverine marks Deadpool’s MCU debut, promising an unforgettable adventure that will not be a direct sequel to the previous Fox films.
In Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds is joined by Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, alongside a star-studded cast including Emma Corrin, Tyler Mane, Jennifer Garner, Karan Soni, and Morena Baccarin. The film follows the titular characters embarking on a mission set by the Time Variance Authority that will have far-reaching consequences for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
High expectations surround Deadpool & Wolverine, with early projections indicating a record-breaking opening weekend and a domestic box office haul of up to $165 million. Marvel recently teased fans in Shanghai with an exclusive sneak peek of the film ahead of its official release date.
