Trinidad and Tobago’s under-19 women’s cricket team is gearing up to defend their title in the 2024 Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars women’s under-19 championship. The tournament, originally delayed due to the impact of Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean, is set to kick off on July 4 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
Tournament director Merissa Aguilleira, a former West Indies women’s captain, has expressed optimism about the successful staging of the event despite the challenges posed by the storm. All five visiting teams – Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, and Windward Islands – are in Trinidad, ready to compete. The Windward Islands are expected to have their full squad ready by July 4, featuring spinner Zaida James.
The tournament will begin with an exciting triple-header at the BLCA, with TT facing Guyana first, followed by Leeward Islands against Barbados, and Windward Islands taking on Jamaica. The decision to host the matches at BLCA was made as the tournament’s umpires were not satisfied with the readiness of the other grounds.
The round-robin format will see matches played on July 4, 6, 7, 9, and 11, with the final set to take place on July 13 at the BLCA. A unique bonus-points system, including incentives for fast bowlers and wrist spinners, will add an extra level of excitement to the competition.
At the end of the tournament, a West Indies under-19 team will be selected to play a bilateral series against the US from July 14-28. Trinidad and Tobago’s under-19 squad, led by captain Samara Ramnath and vice-captain Kdjazz Mitchell, is ready to showcase their talent and defend their title.
Don’t miss out on the action as Trinidad and Tobago’s under-19 women’s cricket team takes on their rivals in this highly anticipated championship.
