Renowned academics and friends gathered to remember Professor Brinsley Samaroo, who passed away a year ago. Fondly recalled as a historian, scholar, storyteller, teacher, politician, and humble individual, Brinsley left a lasting impact on those who knew him.

A close friend of Brinsley, Dr. Lexley Pereira, shared her memories of their friendship. She recounted how she met Brinsley through his daughter, Kavita, and the warm welcome she received from the Samaroo family. Brinsley’s passion for history, politics, and the people of Trinidad and Tobago shone through in their conversations over refreshing coconut water concoctions.

Pereira vividly described the joy of spending time with Brinsley and his wife, Joan, in their mountain home or beach cottage in Mayaro. From engaging political discussions to insights on Trinidad and Tobago’s history, Brinsley’s knowledge was always a source of enlightenment. His genuine and generous nature left a lasting impact on Pereira, who cherishes the memories of their time together.

Another great loss was felt with the passing of Professor Funso Aiyejina, a scholar, poet, naturalist, and academic. Known for his contributions to literature and his deep connection to both Trinidad and Nigeria, Funso was a beacon of wisdom and kindness to many. A close friend to Pereira, she reminisced about his infectious smile, optimistic spirit, and willingness to offer guidance and support whenever needed.

The memories of Brinsley Samaroo and Funso Aiyejina serve as a reminder of their brilliance and humanity. Their untimely passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew them. As Pereira reflects on their lasting impact, she recalls the wisdom of John Donne: “Death, be not proud.” Though they may be gone, the memories of Brinsley and Funso will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate to know them.
