The Playwrights Workshop Trinbago (PWT) will be hosting the July instalment of its Monthly Readers Theatre Series (MRTS) with an exciting new horror screenplay, Bacchanalia by Brendon Alekseii. Set for July 3 at 7 pm, this online Zoom event promises to deliver a thrilling reading that revolves around a young Trini-American woman, Jessie, who must navigate a violent J’Ouvert during Carnival.

In his recent news release, Alekseii shared that Bacchanalia draws inspiration from Trinbagonian Carnival and the Caribbean’s roots in the horror genre. The script challenges traditional notions of violence and colonialism, aiming to spark important questions and conversations among audiences.

Alekseii, a writer, director, and teaching artist, explores the multiplicity of Trinbagonian identity in his work. As a Spoken Word poet and theatrical director, he uses the stage as a platform for community intervention and empathy-building.

PWT invites actors, playwrights, directors, producers, and the general public to join the Zoom meeting for the cold reading and participate in discussions to support the further development of the script. Be prepared for a content warning as the screenplay contains themes of drug use, alcoholism, violence, and gore.

Plays read in 2024 for the MRTS will have the opportunity for workshopping, staging, and award consideration at the New Play Festival in 2025. For more information or to submit a script for reading, contact PWT via email, phone, WhatsApp, or social media.

Don’t miss the chance to engage with exciting new work and support local talent in Trinidad and Tobago’s vibrant theatre scene!
