There has been much talk about the need for a recall provision in the revised constitution, especially in light of the dissatisfaction with governmental services and elected representatives. But let’s take a step back and really consider the implications of such a provision. Not many democratic countries have a recall provision in their constitution, and even fewer actually use it.

While it seems logical for political parties to continuously evaluate the performance of their elected representatives, the reality may be quite different. If representatives are not performing well, it reflects poorly on the party’s leadership who approved their candidacy in the first place.

When considering a recall provision, we need to first establish what constitutes failure of a representative. Is it neglect of making representation, failure of competent authorities to deliver, lack of visibility in their constituency, or simply a reflection of general discontent within the community?

Regarding the modalities of implementing a recall, questions about who can initiate the process, the required percentage of members/electors to trigger a recall, and the possibility of court challenges all arise. Not to mention the potential for opposing parties to use recalls as a tool for political distraction.

And let’s not forget the logistical nightmare of actually holding recall votes and subsequent by-elections. With a possibility of multiple recall votes and by-elections per month, the sheer amount of resources needed is staggering. This could potentially lead to a distraction from other governance issues, financial strain, political exhaustion, and decreased voter participation.

Given these challenges, the political and electoral feasibility of a recall provision remains questionable. It’s crucial to carefully consider all aspects before rushing into such a decision.
