SINCE wrecking resumed in Port of Spain over three weeks ago, 208 vehicles have been towed and 25 fixed-penalty tickets issued, according to Acting Sgt Ravi Maharaj, supervisor of towing operations in the city.

Maharaj noted increased compliance with parking regulations, resulting in reduced congestion on the streets.

“We have seen an improvement with regard to parking in Port of Spain. The taxi stands at St James and St Ann’s have been cleared, and Abercromby and Frederick Street have seen an ease in congestion,” he said.

Previously, taxi drivers had clamoured for the return of wrecking due to illegal parking affecting their business.

Port of Spain mayor Chinua Alleyne emphasized the importance of parking enforcement during a statement at the impound on May 29, noting its timeliness with the upcoming rainy season.

On May 28, Alleyne also highlighted the necessity of resuming wrecking to facilitate free movement of emergency vehicles amid preparations for the rainy season.

Maharaj reported smooth operations, acknowledging that while no one wishes to be towed, there is awareness of where to retrieve their vehicles.

On May 29, Maharaj cautioned that towing would be enforced on Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook, and St James, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights.

“We encourage people to socialize, but also to avoid parking on corners, footpaths, or blocking any driveways,” he said.

Maharaj added that Woodbrook residents have experienced relief from parking issues on weekends, recounting an instance of an emergency requiring a vehicle to be towed from a blocked driveway.
