A recent series of police exercises conducted during rush-hour traffic on July 18 has sparked frustration among drivers and workers in Trinidad and Tobago. Reports indicate that police conducted road checks on various routes including the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, Lady Young Road, Eastern Main Road, and Debe Highway.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Junior Benjamin, explained that the police action was part of their strategy to increase visibility and address crime trends. He emphasized that the focus was not only on crime hotspots but also on preventing the movement of guns through vehicles.
Benjamin dismissed comparisons to a previous unsanctioned Day of Total Policing in 2015, stating that the recent exercises were properly coordinated and part of a directive from the Police Commissioner aimed at enhancing safety and security.
During a media briefing at Police Headquarters, Benjamin urged the public to cooperate with the officers and remain patient, emphasizing that the objective was to combat the crime situation. The recent police action follows a weekend with 19 reported murders and meetings of the National Security Council.
