The recent surge in dengue fever cases, tripling to over 300 within a month, is a cause for concern and requires urgent action from the State. The combination of rising temperatures, increased rainfall leading to more pools of water and mosquitoes, and a high prevalence of chronic diseases like diabetes and sickle-cell anemia has created a perfect storm for the spread of dengue.

Adding to the complexity is the potential for co-infection with COVID-19, which can worsen the outcome for individuals with dengue. The impact of dengue is already being felt, with employers facing staff shortages and more individuals falling ill or needing to care for loved ones at home.

It is crucial for the government to take a more comprehensive approach beyond just spraying and consider declaring dengue a public health emergency to address the situation effectively. Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh’s response to the crisis has been met with some skepticism, and a stronger, more coordinated effort is needed.

By declaring a public health emergency, the government can mobilize resources and implement measures to combat the spread of dengue effectively. Encouraging community involvement, such as draining stagnant water and wearing protective clothing, can also play a crucial role in preventing further cases.

While concerns about funding allocation to regional corporations have been raised, it is essential for all entities to fulfill their responsibilities, especially in areas like clearing clogged drains to prevent mosquito breeding sites. With a collective effort and proactive measures, it is possible to mitigate the impact of dengue and protect public health.
