In Trinidad and Tobago, the issue of flooding seems to be a never-ending problem, with areas like South Quay and Richmond Street constantly inundated with water, despite their proximity to the sea. This has sparked questions about the effectiveness of the education system, particularly at the UWI St Augustine Campus, which boasts a Faculty of Engineering but still struggles to address simple drainage issues.

The lack of progress in solving these flooding problems raises concerns about the quality of education being provided, with some questioning whether institutions like UWI are merely churning out graduates with paper qualifications rather than the critical thinking skills needed to tackle real-world challenges. Despite the presence of engineers and other experts, the floods continue to plague the country, begging the question of whether the current education system is truly equipping students with the skills to make a difference.

As the debate over the role of education in addressing societal issues continues, it is clear that a more objective and honest discussion is needed to address the root causes of these persistent problems. Perhaps it’s time to reevaluate the effectiveness of our education system and ensure that it is producing graduates who can think critically and solve the challenges facing our nation.
