Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is standing firm in her promise to combat crime, asserting that the UNC will take action to reduce criminal activity if elected in the upcoming general election. In a recent statement, Persad-Bissessar expressed her commitment to providing citizens with the necessary tools, such as legal firearms and legislation, to effectively combat the rise in violence perpetuated by vicious criminals.
Addressing the recent spike in violence, Persad-Bissessar expressed her distress over the 14 murders that occurred over the weekend, deeming it a “bloody and brutal weekend.” She emphasized the urgent need for swift action to address the escalating crime rates.
Highlighting the Opposition’s support for anti-crime legislation, Persad-Bissessar reiterated the UNC’s backing of various measures proposed by the government, including the recent Bail (Amendment) Bill 2024. Furthermore, she called for the dismissal of National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds, citing the rampant violence that continues to plague Trinidad and Tobago under his leadership.
In a compelling appeal to prioritize the safety and well-being of citizens, Persad-Bissessar urged Prime Minister Dr Rowley to act in the best interest of the population by removing Hinds from his post as National Security Minister. She underscored the critical need for citizens to have the means to protect themselves, especially when the state has failed to provide adequate security.
With a renewed commitment to empowering citizens and tackling crime head-on, Persad-Bissessar reaffirmed the UNC’s pledge to implement measures that will level the field and combat criminal elements in society. As the election approaches, the issue of public safety remains at the forefront, demanding urgent and decisive action to safeguard the lives of all citizens in Trinidad and Tobago.
