Denise Tsoiafatt-Angus, the political leader of the Innovative Democratic Alliance (IDA), addressed the pressing issue of crime in Tobago during a recent press conference at the IDA’s headquarters in Scarborough. She passionately expressed her concern for the families and communities affected by the current crisis, which has resulted in 16 murders on the island.

Tsoiafatt-Angus emphasized the importance of Tobago having a voice in national security decision-making processes, stating that the island must be represented at the highest levels. She commended a recent meeting between Tobago and the National Security Council as a positive step, despite it coming at a high cost of ten lives lost.

She criticized Prime Minister’s reference to Tobago as a municipality, highlighting the need for recognition of Tobago’s unique identity as half of the nation of Trinidad and Tobago. Tsoiafatt-Angus called for meaningful action to address the escalating crime rates in Tobago, emphasizing the need for legislative reforms and a holistic approach to public safety.

She urged leaders to move beyond lip service and work towards fulfilling the promise of standing “side by side, islands of the blue Caribbean sea.” Tsoiafatt-Angus emphasized the need for comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of crime, including youth intervention programs and education reform.

She called for continued representation of Tobago at the security council to ensure that the island’s unique security needs are met. Tsoiafatt-Angus stressed that addressing crime in Tobago requires a collaborative effort and a deep understanding of the underlying societal issues at play.
