The Innovative Democratic Alliance (IDA) is calling on the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) to rethink its approach to festivals by engaging in thorough discussions with local communities and cultural experts. The IDA emphasizes the importance of understanding and appreciating the cultural and economic significance of the Tobago Heritage Festival in order to preserve its integrity and maximize its benefits.

Expressing disappointment in the THA’s handling of the festival, the IDA highlights the missed opportunities for cultural preservation and economic revitalization. The festival, known as We Come Back, kicked off on July 4 with a thanksgiving service and will conclude on August 1 with a street procession on African Emancipation Day.

As the event approaches its conclusion, the IDA criticizes the THA for not leveraging the festival to celebrate Tobago’s rich traditions and stimulate the local economy effectively. The absence of the traditional opening night event, which usually sets the tone for the festival and drives economic activity, is particularly concerning to the IDA.

The IDA emphasizes that the festival is not just a cultural celebration but also a vital economic driver for various sectors, including clothing stores, seamstresses, tailors, hairdressers, barbers, make-up artists, transportation services, and vendors offering food, beverages, jewelry, clothing, and heritage items. The economic impact of the festival extends to supporting children’s educational needs, extracurricular activities, and community well-being.
