The 22nd annual Freedom Run 5K in Sangre Grande just got even better with the addition of scholarships to the list of prizes. This exciting race is set to kick off at 4 pm at Walke Street, taking participants through the streets of Sangre Grande before finishing back at the starting point. But before the race begins, a vibrant cultural program will start at 1.30 pm to get everyone in the spirit.
Last year’s champions, Kenyan Alex Ekesa and Arimian April Francis, will be back to defend their titles. And besides the usual $6,000 in cash prizes, this year marks a significant milestone as scholarships are now being offered by the Sangre Grande Educational Institute and the New Butler Associate College.
Rodney Edwards, principal of the Sangre Grande Educational Institute, expressed his excitement for this new opportunity to support the youth. The scholarship, valued at $12,000, covers tuition fees for the year. Applicants must have completed secondary school with two or three CSEC passes, be willing to be involved in school and community activities, and submit to a means test.
On the other hand, Ife Alleyne, principal of New Butler Associate College, shared insights into the Save One Scholarship Programme, which aims to assist students in Laventille and surrounding areas. The scholarship, lasting for two years, provides the opportunity to repeat forms four and five, attend form six, or even obtain a diploma or associate degree.
Both educators emphasize the importance of keeping students engaged and motivated to pursue their education, ultimately setting them up for success in the future. With these scholarships up for grabs, the Freedom Run 5K is not only a thrilling event but also a platform for empowering the next generation.
