In a bold and alarming warning, a former US military intelligence analyst has raised concerns that Israel may be on the brink of a catastrophic war with Hezbollah in a bid to bolster Benjamin Netanyahu’s political standing. Harrison Mann, a major in the Defence Intelligence Agency who recently left the military over US support for Israel’s actions in Gaza, spoke exclusively to The Guardian about the potentially deadly consequences of such a conflict.

Despite the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stating that plans for an offensive in Lebanon are finalized and growing hostility from Israeli leaders, US officials have quietly indicated that Netanyahu’s government may not be actively seeking a war. However, Mann believes that internal political pressures and Netanyahu’s personal agenda could still push Israel towards a devastating new conflict.

Mann, who is one of the highest-ranking US military officers to resign over the situation in Gaza, explained that Netanyahu’s need for constant war could be driving the push towards Hezbollah. The potential for financial and legal repercussions could be incentivizing the Israeli prime minister to pursue aggressive military action in order to maintain his grip on power.

While the Israeli military may believe that a pre-emptive strike against Hezbollah is the solution, Mann cautioned that the reality of a ground offensive could lead to heavy casualties on both sides. Furthermore, the impact of such a conflict could draw the US into a regional war, with potential repercussions beyond anyone’s control.

As tensions continue to rise and the risk of all-out war looms over the region, Mann’s insights shed light on the dangerous path that Israel may be treading. The consequences of such a conflict, not only in terms of civilian lives lost but also the broader geopolitical ramifications, are impossible to overlook.

With Israel seemingly on the brink of a fateful decision, the world watches in apprehension as the potential for a clash between two formidable forces grows ever closer. In the midst of political gamesmanship and power struggles, the lives of ordinary civilians hang in the balance, caught in the crossfire of larger forces at play.
