Due to limited communication, power, and road access in north Tobago following Hurricane Beryl, several schools will remain closed on July 2. Chief Secretary Farley Augustine made this announcement after conducting a tour of the affected areas and consulting with Secretary Zia Hackett and public servants in the Division of Education, Research and Technology.
The schools that will be closed include Parlatuvier Anglican, L’anse Fourmi Methodist, L’anse Fourmi ECCE, Charlotteville Methodist, Charlotteville SDA Primary, Speyside High School, Speyside Anglican, Speyside ECCE, and Pentecostal Light and Life Foundation High School.
Farley mentioned in a Facebook post that the communities from Parlatuvier to L’anse Fourmi are facing challenges with telecommunication, hindering their communication with TEMA. Additionally, PTSC buses and large maxis heading north of the island can only go as far as Bloody Bay at the moment.
T&TEC is working towards restoring electricity across the island, but the education division stated that power may not be fully restored by July 2. Despite this setback, they emphasized their concern for the safety and comfort of the students.
Although Tobago was fortunate to avoid severe damage from Hurricane Beryl, the island experienced heavy rain and strong winds that caused trees to fall and roofs to be blown off in several areas.
