Colleagues, friends, family, and stakeholders in education gathered in the auditorium of Palo Seco Secondary School on Thursday, June 27 to pay tribute to its longest-serving principal of 12 years, Davanand Sinanan, who was retiring after 35 years of service to education.
Tributes from various individuals and entities were expressed during the function, aptly themed “To Sir with Love,” hosted by staff members. Joanna Collins-Young, a colleague and teacher at the school, led the accolades, highlighting Sinanan’s exceptional journey in education from his first appointment as a Teacher II/III to his eventual promotion as principal in 2012.
Mrs. Collins-Young praised Sinanan’s dedication, regularity, punctuality, and high visibility as a principal, ensuring that staff and students were motivated to achieve high standards. She also noted his establishment of the school’s first steel orchestra, which serenaded guests with beautiful renditions throughout the event.
TTUTA president Martin Lum Kin expressed profound appreciation for Sinanan’s extensive service to the association and its members during his career. Acting principal Natalie O’Connor expressed gratitude for Sinanan’s tenure and the successful institution she was inheriting upon his retirement.
In his response, Sinanan reflected on his humble upbringing and paid tribute to his family for their support. He highlighted his global perspective on education attained through his involvement with Education International (EI) and expressed disappointment with the Ministry of Education for its shortcomings in financial and infrastructural support for schools.
Sinanan closed by thanking the school for honoring his career, emphasizing the importance of service to education and encouraging staff and students to continue striving for excellence. The event concluded with a vote of thanks and heartfelt farewell to an outstanding educator and advocate for social justice.
