The Central Statistical Office (CSO) has reported that the price indices for food, tobacco, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages have seen an increase in June. The indices, which track the proportionate increase in prices over a period based on surveys conducted in various locations, are key indicators of economic trends.

The CSO’s all-items index for June was 123.7, a slight 0.1 per cent increase from May. The price index for food and non-alcoholic beverages also saw a rise from 147.4 in May to 148.6 in June, reflecting an increase of 0.8 per cent.

Factors like the fluctuation in prices of tomatoes, parboiled rice, fresh whole chicken, and various other food items contributed to this increase. However, this upward trend was offset by a decrease in prices of other food items like cucumber, cheddar cheese, and soyabean oil.

Additionally, the CSO’s report noted a 0.2 per cent increase in the sub-index for alcoholic beverages and tobacco, while there was a 0.9 per cent decrease in the sub-index for clothing and footwear. The inflation rate for June was reported at 0.7 per cent, a slight decrease from the previous period.

These figures provide valuable insights into the changing prices and trends in the market, helping businesses and consumers alike to make informed decisions.
