MP Dr Lackram Bodoe of Fyzabad has once again reached out to Rural Development and Local Government Minister Faris Al-Rawi for help regarding a collapsed bridge across the South Oropouche River at St John Branch Trace. The bridge had initially collapsed on July 10, prompting Bodoe to write to Al-Rawi on July 15. In a follow-up letter dated July 22, Bodoe emphasized the urgent need for intervention to assist affected residents.
According to Bodoe, seven households are currently stranded, with over 35 residents marooned on the other side of the river. Additionally, 11 vehicles remain left stranded due to the collapse of the bridge, hindering necessary outflow and access to emergency services. The transport of produce from agricultural areas has also been suspended, impacting the livelihoods of residents.
The only means of access for these residents is a small boat, which poses risks for some, especially those with medical issues. Bodoe highlighted the urgent need for safe pedestrian access across the river and the retrieval of stranded vehicles as immediate priorities for the community.
He proposed the removal of the collapsed bridge from the river and the construction of a new bridge for both vehicular and pedestrian access as short-term solutions. Bodoe expressed his willingness to collaborate with relevant government agencies to alleviate the plight of affected residents.
Copies of the letter were also sent to Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan and Siparia Mayor Doodnath Mayhroo for their awareness. Al-Rawi previously clarified that the land where the bridge is situated does not fall under the jurisdiction of Siparia Borough Corporation, as confirmed by an email from the corporation’s CEO, Ann Hosein.
While Sinanan stated that the bridge did not fall under his ministry, he assured that technical assistance would be provided if needed. Al-Rawi also expressed commitment to finding a solution, reassuring both Bodoe and Sinanan that the matter would be addressed promptly.
