The autopsy report stated that the cause of death was aspiration pneumonitis and a ventricular septal defect (VSD), but Bains is not convinced. She raised doubts about the accuracy of the findings, especially since her baby was discharged from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) without any indication of a heart condition.
Jerel Bains, just six weeks old, tragically died after being rushed to the NICU at the Port of Spain General Hospital. Despite doctors’ efforts to resuscitate him, Jerel did not make it. The sudden loss left his family in shock and prompted questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Bains vividly recalled the moments leading up to Jerel’s passing. She had fed him and put him to sleep, following the hospital’s routine. In the early hours of the morning, Jerel was found unresponsive, prompting his father to perform CPR on the way to the hospital. The bruises on Jerel’s chest from the CPR only added to Bains’ distress and confusion.
The grieving mother is seeking answers and contemplating her next steps with the guidance of her lawyer. Unconvinced by the autopsy report, Bains remains adamant that there are discrepancies that need to be addressed. She expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the authorities and hopes to find closure through a proper investigation into Jerel’s death.
