Tobago Placed Under Tropical Storm Watch
The Met Office has issued a tropical storm alert yellow level for Tobago as Tropical Storm Beryl moves towards the southeast Caribbean, possibly strengthening into the first hurricane of the year. The tropical storm watch indicates that tropical storm force winds are possible within the next 48 hours.
Currently, Tropical Storm Beryl is centred near 9.9N 47.1W, approximately 1,450 km east of Tobago. There is a 30-40 per cent chance of the island experiencing tropical storm force winds as Beryl approaches the southern Windwards. Sea conditions are expected to become occasionally rough as well.
Citizens are advised to secure loose outdoor objects and livestock in preparation for the potential tropical storm conditions. Marine interests should also exercise caution during this period. Barbados has issued a hurricane watch and warned of flash flooding and power outages.
Trinidad and Tobago are also on alert with an 80 per cent chance of thunderstorm activity due to a low-level trough. Gusty winds can lead to fallen trees, displaced items, and rough seas. Street flooding and ponding may also occur as a result. Stay prepared and safe during this weather event.
