Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP) leader Watson Duke has made it clear that his main focus right now is on Tobago. However, Duke, a former Public Services Association (PSA) president, mentioned that he is open to supporting his former labor colleagues in any efforts that would benefit the working class.
This response came after Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM) president Ancel Roget called for a national-front alliance against the PNM in the upcoming general election. Roget made this call during a Labor Day rally at Charlie King Junction.
TTUTA president Martin Lum Kin, speaking at May Day celebrations in San Fernando, emphasized that the union, while addressing various issues with the Education Ministry, has never aligned itself with any political party.
When asked about supporting labor colleagues, Duke stated, “Currently my focus is to continue representing Tobago and its people.”
Historically, relations between trade unions and political parties have had their ups and downs. Back in 2010, Roget and other labor leaders campaigned against the PNM through the MSJ, which was part of the coalition that defeated the PNM in the general election.
However, tensions arose in 2011 when the PSA agreed to a wage cap proposal from the PP, leading to a split in the labor movement. Duke was the PSA president at that time.
At the recent Labor Day celebrations, UNC deputy political leader Dr. Roodal Moonilal, along with other prominent party members, showed their solidarity with the labor movement.
The UNC released a statement underlining their commitment to workers’ rights through their participation in the march. Initiatives like these aim to strengthen the relationship between policymakers and grassroots workers, fostering a more inclusive discussion on labor rights.
