A San Francique man has been sentenced to an additional three years and six months in prison for the 2018 stabbing of his elder brother in the neck. Bryan Harripersad received the sentence from Justice Lisa Ramsumair-Hinds on July 30.

The incident took place at the family’s home on January 30, 2018, resulting in the death of Harripersad’s brother, Ricky. Harripersad initially faced a murder charge, but a plea deal was reached in July. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter based on provocation during his appearance in court on July 23.

Despite receiving credit for time served, a one-third discount for his guilty plea, and reductions to his sentence, Harripersad will still serve three years, six months, and a day in prison. Justice Ramsumair-Hinds emphasized that releasing him at this time was inappropriate due to the severity of the crime.

The court heard that both brothers were intoxicated and had a heated argument prior to the stabbing. While Ricky initially threw a bottle at a television, Harripersad later grabbed a chopper and subsequently stabbed his brother in a fit of rage. He told authorities that it was a single blow.

Ramsumair-Hinds stressed the importance of non-violent conflict resolution in society, especially within families. She acknowledged the provocation but highlighted Harripersad’s belligerent behavior leading up to the incident.

During a victim impact statement, another brother described Ricky as troublesome and often disrespectful. Despite their strained relationship, he expressed forgiveness towards Harripersad and described him as supportive.

Represented by Khadija Sinanan of the Public Defenders’ Department, Harripersad had legal counsel in court. The State was represented by Charmaine Samuel and Guiliana Guy.
