The excitement of the Paris 2024 Olympics is in full swing, but fans of the Mario & Sonic video game series might be feeling a bit down. Lee Cocker, a key player in the development of all the games in the franchise, took to social media last week to announce that the series may have reached its end after the Tokyo 2020 games.

Cocker, who spent 14 years managing the Mario & Sonic Olympic franchise, shared a nostalgic image of himself with the Olympic committee president from 2009, reminiscing about the past successes of the series. He mentioned how he doesn’t believe fans will see a character-based title like Mario and Sonic again, as the gaming landscape evolves.

As nWay released the free-to-play title Olympics GO! on mobile last month, it seems this might be the only Olympic video game available for now. With no console video game tied to the Summer Olympics for the first time in 30 years, fans are left wondering about the future of this iconic partnership between Mario and Sonic.

Stay tuned for any updates on the future of the series. How do you feel about the potential end of this unique gaming crossover? Let us know in the comments below.
