Acting Attorney General Marvin Gonzales refrained from offering an opinion on a recent call by PrideTT for legislative protections for the LGBTQIA community in Trinidad and Tobago. The group advocated for anti-discrimination laws during a march in Port of Spain on July 28th.
In response to inquiries via WhatsApp, Gonzales stated, “I have not studied the matter sufficiently in order to proffer an opinion.” However, he emphasized that existing laws in Trinidad and Tobago, along with constitutional provisions, already offer protection to all citizens regardless of various factors.
Gonzales is currently filling in for Attorney General Reginald Armour, SC, who is attending a Caricom heads of government meeting in Grenada with the Prime Minister. The conversation around LGBTQIA rights and protections continues to be an ongoing dialogue in the country.
