Robert Downey Jr. set to make a comeback in Marvel films — but in a different role than Iron Man

Marvel Studios made a triumphant return to San Diego Comic-Con with an electrifying panel featuring surprise guests Harrison Ford and Robert Downey Jr. Downey announced his return to the Marvel universe as the villain Doctor Doom, stunning fans with his new role. The Russo brothers, who will be directing the upcoming film, praised Downey’s appearance as a sign of the limitless potential in the Marvel multi-universe.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige kicked off the panel by revealing that the Marvel Cinematic Universe had now surpassed $30 billion in box-office earnings thanks to the success of “Deadpool & Wolverine.” He announced the titles of the next two Avengers films, “Avengers: Secret Wars” and “Avengers: Doomsday,” set to hit theaters in the coming years.

The cast of “Captain America: Brave New World” teased details about the upcoming film, with Giancarlo Esposito revealing he will be playing the villain Sidewinder. Fans were treated to clips from the movie, including President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross transforming into the Red Hulk, played by Ford.

The panel also included surprises from the cast and director of “Thunderbolts” and a sneak peek at “The Fantastic Four,” which is set to begin filming in London next week. Marvel fans were thrilled by the announcements and teases for upcoming projects.
