Fishermen and other stakeholders affected by the February 7 oil spill in Tobago have until August 5 to submit their claim forms to the THA Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment, and Sustainable Development. Chaired by Tobago Emergence Management Agency director Allan Stewart, the Oil Spill Relief Committee (OSRC) has been established to administer this process.

The OSRC aims to provide relief to the local fishing industry severely impacted by the environmental disaster by conducting damage assessments and needs analysis. It has committed to providing regular updates on relief efforts and monitoring the implementation of assistance programs to ensure the equitable distribution of relief and sustainable recovery for Tobago’s fishing industry.

Following the oil spill that contaminated waters along Tobago’s southwestern peninsula, the THA has received the $50 million promised by the Central Government to assist with expenses. Claim forms can be obtained from the Department of Marine Resources and Fisheries or the Tobago Emergency Management Agency’s office for those seeking relief. Documentation such as proof of ownership, damage descriptions, proof of income, and engagement in fishing activities must be provided along with the claim forms.

Individuals affected by the oil spill can contact the 211 call centre for further inquiries.
