Keith Scotland, SC, the Port of Spain South MP, is set to become a Cabinet minister overseeing policing to assist Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds in the battle against crime. Prime Minister Dr. Rowley announced this decision during a post-cabinet briefing at Whitehall on July 25.

Following relentless calls from the Opposition for Hinds’ removal, especially in the midst of a surge in criminal activity that saw 15 people murdered over a single weekend in July, this move aims to strengthen the fight against crime.

Dr. Rowley emphasized the need for a focused approach towards the police force and various security aspects. He highlighted the importance of special care, attention, monitoring, review, and guidance for the police. As a result, Keith Scotland will be appointed as a Cabinet member responsible for policing, offender management, illegal immigrants, drug trafficking, drug enforcement, and money laundering.

This announcement comes at a crucial time when the pressure from criminal elements is high, and the government aims to reinforce its efforts in maintaining national security. Dr. Rowley mentioned that the role of a national security minister is challenging and often thankless, given the complexities of the issues at hand.

Through this strategic appointment, the government is looking to streamline its focus on tackling crime and supporting law enforcement. Keith Scotland’s extensive experience, particularly in the legal field, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the Ministry of National Security.

As this new chapter unfolds, the government remains committed to its mission of safeguarding the nation and combating criminal activities. The collaboration between Keith Scotland and the Ministry of National Security is anticipated to strengthen security measures and enhance the overall safety of the country.
