Trinidad and Tobago’s under-19 men’s cricketers kicked off the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Men’s Under-19 50-over Championships with a thrilling 31-run victory against the Leeward Islands. The match took place at Sion Hill Playing Field in St Vincent on July 23.
Coming off a disappointing finish in the Rising Stars Two-day Championships, Trinidad and Tobago’s team was determined to redeem themselves in the 50-over format. When sent in to bat by their opponents, Trinidad and Tobago struggled, posting a total of just 108 runs. Middle-order batsman Andrew Rambaran was the top scorer with 39 runs.
Despite the low target, the Leeward Islands faced a tough battle during their chase. Trinidad and Tobago bowler Fareez Ali wreaked havoc on the Leeward Islands’ top order, reducing them to 15 for four. A partnership between Jewel Andrew and Nathan Edward briefly revived their hopes before Trinidad and Tobago’s bowlers, led by Joshua Davis, staged a remarkable comeback. Davis finished with figures of five for 20, helping his team defend the modest target.
Trinidad and Tobago will look to build on this victory as they face Barbados in their next match on July 24. Meanwhile, Barbados’s opening match against the Windward Islands ended in a no result due to rain.
Other notable results from the tournament include Guyana’s 12-run victory over Jamaica and the Windward Islands’ final score of 192 against Barbados before the weather intervened. Exciting cricket action continues as the Rising Stars Championships unfold.
