Trinidad and Tobago’s very own Jereem Richards delivered a stellar performance at the London Diamond League, setting a new personal best time of 44.18 seconds in the 400-metre final. The race, held on July 20 at the Olympic Stadium, showcased Richards’ talent and determination as he crossed the finish line in third place.
Prior to his impressive showing in London, Richards had already demonstrated his skill at the NGC National Association of Athletics Administrations Junior and Senior Championships in June, where he clocked a then-season’s best of 44.72 to secure the national 400m title.
Despite facing tough competition amongst seasoned runners like 2012 400m Olympic champion Kirani James, Richards maintained his composure and ran a flawless race out of lane eight. Surpassing his previous personal best time of 44.54, Richards left everything on the track to secure his third-place finish.
Notably, Matthew Hudson-Smith from Great Britain dominated the race with an astonishing time of 43.74, establishing himself as the front-runner in the event. Vernon Norwood of the USA claimed second place in 44.10, just slightly ahead of Richards.
With the Paris Olympic Games on the horizon, Richards, 30, is looking to continue his impressive form in both the 200m and 400m events, as well as the 4x400m relay. His sights are set on a spot in the final and a potential podium finish at the upcoming Olympics in France.
