A tragic incident unfolded on July 19 in Marcano Quarry, Laventille, where a 19-year-old UWI student, Samantha Celine Chadee, lost her life in a targeted attack. Along with Chadee, another individual named Walter John also fell victim to the ambush while leaving a relative’s home.

According to police reports, the pair was inside John’s grey Hyundai Accent car when assailants armed with high-powered rifles opened fire, leaving them with fatal gunshot wounds. Despite John’s attempt to drive away, he crashed a short distance later into a drain, where residents alerted the authorities.

Upon arrival, Dr. Ojar, the district medical officer, confirmed the tragic outcome, pronouncing both Chadee and John deceased at the scene. The investigation unfolded as crime scene officers uncovered crucial evidence, including 24 spent 5.56 shell casings and a live round of 5.7mm ammunition.

The Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region One, has taken charge of the case, delving deeper into the circumstances surrounding this senseless act of violence. The loss of young lives like Chadee’s is a stark reminder of the challenges our communities face in addressing and preventing such incidents.
