The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (TTEC) has successfully resolved issues related to the global IT disturbance stemming from a security software update that wreaked havoc on banks, airlines, and media outlets worldwide on July 19.

T&TEC has confirmed that a brief disruption to its online payment platforms, caused by the unprecedented global IT outage, has been rectified. Customers can now resume making payments via Quick Pay and Customer Web Access.

While it remains uncertain how many local banks were impacted by the global IT issue on July 19, reports from international news agencies indicate that this has been deemed the largest IT disruption in history.

According to cyber security firm CrowdStrike, the problems originated from a faulty update to Microsoft Windows systems, with Mac and Linux systems remaining unaffected. CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz has reassured users that a fix is in progress.

Despite Kurtz’s assurance, disruptions continued and even escalated, as reported by US outlet AP. The fallout led to disruptions in check-in and booking services, resulting in long queues at airports across the US, Europe, and Asia.

The chaos extended to hospitals and doctors’ offices, where appointment systems malfunctioned, leading to canceled surgeries. Kurtz expressed his regret over the impact caused, stating, “We’re deeply sorry for the disruption experienced by customers, travelers, and all those affected by this issue, including our own companies.

He further mentioned, “We are aware of the problem and are actively working on resolving it.”
