The issue of child abuse in Trinidad and Tobago is a pressing concern that demands immediate attention. The government’s neglect of victims of child abuse is a troubling reality that cannot be ignored.

The high incidence of abuse against children in TT highlights the urgent need for decisive action from our government. The lack of proper funding and staffing for critical institutions like the Children’s Authority is a clear indication of the continued neglect of our youth’s welfare.

The overwhelming case-load of the Children’s Authority has left children without essential services such as accommodation, security, counseling, and legal aid. Despite government allocations, funding for child welfare often takes a backseat to other sectors, raising concerns about the state’s commitment to protecting children.

While there have been instances where the courts have condemned the State for failing to meet legal obligations to children, greater transparency and accountability in State expenditure are necessary to address mismanagement in child protection agencies.

It is imperative that we advocate for financial investment in the safety of our nation’s most vulnerable demographic and hold Caricom member states accountable for upholding agreed upon standards of child protection.

The call to action is clear – we must be the voice for the children of Trinidad and Tobago and ensure that their protection is a top priority for our government.
