Ricky Inshan Ali, a Couva man, was recently sentenced for indecent assault in his absence by a High Court judge on July 15. Justice Kathy Ann Waterman-Latchoo handed down a three-month sentence to Ali, along with a $10,000 fine to be paid to his victim. In addition, if he fails to pay the fine, he will face an additional six months behind bars.

Despite being found guilty by a jury, Ali absconded, prompting the judge to issue a bench warrant for his arrest. Even his bailor could not be located. Waterman-Latchoo made the decision to sentence Ali in his absence after hearing submissions on a plea in mitigation. She took into account his previous good character and time spent on remand before trial, resulting in a three-year term with deductions.

The charge of indecent assault against Ali dates back to March 2004, when the victim, a seven-year-old at the time, asked him for a dollar. He then took her to a pavilion where the assault occurred before sending her home. The victim confided in a teacher, who promptly reported the incident to the authorities.

During his arrest, Ali claimed it was a mistake and that he had only “touched” the victim. Despite his conviction earlier this year, he was allowed to make arrangements for his ailing father before disappearing. Ali was represented in court by Renuka Rambhajan.
