Housing and Urban Development Minister Camille Robinson-Regis recently announced that over 100 housing subsidies have been distributed in Tobago this year, totaling $3.19 million. The Minister made this announcement at a subsidy distribution ceremony held at the Shaw Park Complex in Scarborough on July 9, where she emphasized the significant impact this initiative has had on the residents of Tobago.
Robinson-Regis highlighted that out of the 105 disbursements made in Tobago, 68 were for home-improvement subsidies and 37 for home-construction subsidies, totaling $3.19 million. She emphasized that this initiative was not just about distributing funds, but about empowering the people of Tobago.
Since the inception of the program in 2021, a total of 232 subsidies valued at $7.85 million have been disbursed in Tobago, with 107 allocated for home-construction and 125 for home-improvement subsidies. The Minister projected that by the 2024/2025 fiscal year, an estimated $20.39 million would be allocated to improve the lives of 703 families in Trinidad and Tobago.
Minister Adrian Leonce ensured that the process of distributing the subsidies was transparent and fair, emphasizing that every beneficiary truly deserved the support they received. Gender and Child Affairs Minister Ayanna Webster-Roy shared her personal story of building her first home in Goodwood without any subsidies, highlighting the importance of homeownership as a legacy for future generations.
Minister Shamfa Cudjoe-Lewis emphasized that the housing subsidies aimed to provide comfortable homes for the beneficiaries and create opportunities for their children. Following the ceremony, the ministers visited ongoing construction sites of some of the program’s beneficiaries at various locations in Tobago.
