Prime Minister Dr. Rowley convened a meeting with the National Security Council and heads of the State’s security apparatus at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s on Monday to address the pressing issue of crime.
During the meeting, Dr. Rowley expressed deep concerns about the rise in violent crime and the use of illegal high-powered assault weapons. Emphasizing the need for a proactive, intelligence-driven, targeted, and robust approach, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of focusing on individuals involved in serious criminal activities.
The government reiterated its full support for law enforcement agencies, particularly the police service, in carrying out their duties within legal boundaries.
Following the meeting, the security services agreed to implement sustained joint operations in a coordinated and collaborative manner, specifically targeting areas with high levels of criminal activity.
In attendance alongside the Prime Minister were National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Stuart Young.
The meeting was also attended by Erla Harewood-Christopher, the police commissioner, and deputy police commissioners Junior Benjamin, Natasha George, and Suzette Martin, as well as heads of the ten police divisions. Additionally, Chief of Defence Staff Air Vice Marshall Darryl Daniel, acting prisons commissioner Carlos Corraspe, and Strategic Services Agency director Brigadier General (Ret’d) Anthony Phillips-Spencer were present.
