Valve, the enigmatic powerhouse behind the gaming industry giant known as Steam, has long been shrouded in secrecy. Despite its significant influence, Valve operates with a surprisingly small team of just 336 employees, according to leaked data from 2021.

This revealing information comes from an unlikely source – Wolfire’s antitrust lawsuit against Valve. The leaked data, unearthed by SteamDB creator Pavel Djundik, sheds light on Valve’s headcount, payroll, and even gross margins over an 18-year period.

The employee data spans from 2003 to 2021, categorizing Valve’s workforce into four distinct groups: “Admin,” “Games,” “Steam,” and, more recently, “Hardware.” The numbers paint a vivid picture of Valve’s inner workings, showing fluctuations in spending and staffing levels over the years.

One particularly intriguing insight is the decline in payroll spending for Valve’s “Games” division, dropping from $221 million in 2017 to $192 million in 2021. Despite this, Valve continues to wield immense influence in the gaming world, employing just 79 individuals for its pivotal Steam platform.

Surprisingly, Valve’s “Hardware” department, responsible for creations like the Steam Deck, boasts a modest 41 employees. Valve’s evolution into a hardware-focused company, as indicated by Pierre-Loup Griffais in a 2023 interview, reflects its adaptability and innovation in the industry.

Critics, including Wolfire, have questioned Valve’s investment in improving the Steam Store, citing its small staff as a potential limiting factor. Valve’s profitability per employee, however, reportedly surpasses industry giants like Google and Amazon, a testament to its efficiency and business acumen.

While Valve remains tight-lipped about its financials and employee count, the leaked data provides a rare glimpse into the company’s inner workings. Despite its small team, Valve’s impact on the gaming world is undeniable, with Steam continuing to dominate the market.

Valve’s silence on the matter only adds to its mystique, leaving industry analysts and gamers alike eager for more insights. As we await further developments, one thing is clear – Valve’s small but mighty team is a force to be reckoned with in the ever-evolving world of gaming.
