Before Keri Russell became a household name with roles in hit shows like “Felicity” and “The Americans,” she was just a teenager trying to make her mark on the entertainment industry. Russell recently opened up about her early days on the Disney Channel’s ’90s revival of The Mickey Mouse Club in a candid interview with Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his podcast, Dinner’s on Me.

At age 17, Russell left the show under controversial circumstances. As she jokingly explained, it was usually the girls who “looked like they were sexually active” that had to go, and she may have been one of the first. The boys, on the other hand, could stay until they were 19, leading Russell to quip, “I had sex with that person, so I know that they’ve had sex.”

Despite feeling like she was the least talented member of the star-studded cast, which included future superstars like Ryan Gosling, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake, Russell made a lasting impression. She reflected on her audition experience, sharing how she stood in line at a casting call in Colorado and landed the role by chance.

Looking back on her time on the show, Russell credits Disney for casting “normal” kids like her and creating a supportive environment with a large group of fellow young performers. Unlike some child stars who have faced troubling experiences in the industry, Russell felt protected by the sheer number of other kids on set and says the adults were “invisible” to her.

While her time on The Mickey Mouse Club may have been short-lived, it was certainly a formative experience for Russell as she navigated the challenges of growing up in the spotlight. Her journey from a small town in Colorado to the bright lights of Hollywood is a testament to her resilience and talent, setting the stage for the successful career that would follow.
