Relatives of a cardiac patient in Avocat Village, Fyzabad, are breathing a sigh of relief after managing to get her out of her home which was cut off by a collapsed bridge with the help of a boat on July 11.
Leena Seepersad, aged 62, who had been experiencing shortness of breath, was stuck in her home after the bridge collapsed, isolating over 40 villagers in the area.
Her daughter, Nadia Ramoutar, explained their struggles to Newsday, detailing the challenges they faced in getting Seepersad the medical care she needed.
With the assistance of kind individuals, Seepersad was safely transported out of her home and is currently staying with relatives as she recuperates.
However, concerns remain about the safety and accessibility of the makeshift transport solution during the rainy season, as villagers fear potential flooding in the area as a result of the collapsed bridge.
Fyzabad MP Dr. Lackram Bodoe visited the site and called for urgent action to address the bridge situation, highlighting the efforts being made by villagers to navigate the challenges imposed by the collapse.
Despite reassurances from various officials, including Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan, questions still remain about the responsibility and timelines for addressing the collapsed bridge issue.
The plight of the villagers in Avocat Village continues as they await a resolution to ensure safe and secure access in and out of their community.
