In a move that is sure to catch the attention of Russia, the first American-made F-16 fighter jets for Ukraine are on their way and are expected to be ready for action this summer, according to U.S. and European officials. This delivery of advanced warplanes will provide Ukraine with a much-needed boost to its defense against ongoing Russian attacks.

The aircraft, which are coming from the Netherlands and Denmark, with additional donations pledged from Belgium and Norway, are just the beginning of a plan to eventually field 60 F-16s for Ukraine. This effort also includes support from various nations for pilot training, weapons, and logistical assistance.

The timing of this announcement coincides with the NATO leaders summit in Washington, where the focus is on maintaining support for Ukraine amidst uncertainty about the future of the alliance and the upcoming U.S. presidential election.

Furthermore, a separate statement released by the White House and Berlin revealed plans for the Pentagon to rotate powerful missile systems through Germany starting in 2026. These deployments will include hypersonic weapons with longer ranges than anything currently in Europe.

While the Biden administration initially resisted providing F-16s to Ukraine, the urgent need to combat Russia’s devastating use of glide bombs prompted a change of heart. Ukrainian officials believe the F-16s will enable them to intercept these deadly weapons and protect their territory effectively.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store emphasized the importance of bolstering Ukraine’s air defenses in the face of recent attacks that have left dozens dead. The commitment to F-16s is a critical step in addressing the country’s vulnerability and ensuring its security.

This announcement follows training sessions for Ukrainian pilots in the U.S. and Europe, with a focus on improving their skills in both aviation and the English language. The goal is to equip Ukraine’s forces to effectively defend against Russian aggression and protect their civilian infrastructure.

With contributions from Dan Lamothe and Karen DeYoung, this report highlights the significant developments in Ukraine’s defense capabilities and the ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s ability to resist Russian attacks.
