Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is causing a buzz among his Western allies as he engages in a high-stakes meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. This marks his first foreign trip since beginning his third term in office this past June.

Touching down in Moscow just hours after a tragedy in Ukraine that claimed the lives of at least 41 people, including children, Modi’s visit is under intense scrutiny. Despite the somber backdrop, images from Moscow show a radiant Modi embracing Putin, with a viral video capturing the Russian president addressing Modi as his “dearest friend.”

As Modi embarks on this two-day journey to the Kremlin, simultaneous discussions are taking place at a Nato summit in Washington, addressing the 2022 conflict in Ukraine. While some voices have expressed concern over the timing of Modi’s visit, Indian officials maintain that this trip is part of a long-standing strategic partnership, unrelated to external political events.

However, with the US voicing unease over the embrace between Modi and Putin, tensions are flaring. The State Department has urged Modi to emphasize Ukraine’s territorial integrity during their talks, highlighting the delicate diplomatic dance India must navigate as it balances relationships with both Russia and the US.

As the spotlight remains fixed on Modi’s actions in Moscow, questions arise: Is India inadvertently bolstering Russia’s standing on the global stage, and what repercussions could this have on international relations moving forward?

With deep ties dating back to the Cold War, India and Russia share a complex relationship, encompassing defense cooperation, energy, and science and technology. As trade between the two nations flourishes, Modi’s visit aims to address trade imbalances and foster greater investment in India.

Countering China’s expanding influence in the region, India has cultivated closer ties with Western allies, yet the ever-evolving geopolitical landscape presents new challenges. As President Putin strengthens ties with Beijing, India faces the delicate task of maintaining relationships with both Russia and the US to ensure its own strategic interests are protected.

As Modi navigates this delicate diplomatic dance, the world watches with bated breath to see how his interactions with Putin will shape India’s role in the global arena.
